Becoming a Patient/Making a Referral

Most patients find their way to Barrow specialists through their referring physician.  Physicians may contact Barrow directly using the ResourceLink Information and Referral Service by calling 800-BARROW1 (800-227-7691) or by completing a Contact Us request to refer a patient to one of our neurology or neurosurgery specialists.  Typically, the patient's pertinent medical history and radiological films are sent to the specialist in advance for the Barrow team to review.  If multiple specialties are involved, as in the case of patients with complex skull base lesions, craniofacial disorders, or brain tumors, referred cases are reviewed at regular case conferences that give the entire team of specialists an opportunity to develop appropriate recommendations for each individual patient's treatment plan.

Patients may contact Barrow specialists directly by calling 800-BARROW1 (800-227-7691) to seek a second opinion or to find a specialist.  The trained staff at the ResourceLink can direct callers to the most appropriate neurology or neurosurgery specialist for the patient's condition.  See this website's "Find a Physician" tab at the top of the page for valuable information about the experience, training, and areas of special interest for each of Barrow's specialists.  Patients may use the search function to look up Barrow physicians by subspecialty, location, diagnosis, or name.  Again, patients may be asked to send copies of their medical records and radiological films in advance for the Barrow team to review.

Of course, patients in Arizona who have suffered serious injury to their head or spine can be taken via ambulance or air transport to St. Joseph's Hospital's Level I Trauma Center, one of the busiest neurotrauma centers in the country and the only trauma center in Arizona verified by the American College of Surgeons.  The redesigned Emergency Department, which includes the most advanced diagnostic imaging and treatment technologies, is available to treat patients who may be experiencing acute stroke, head or spine injuries, epileptic seizures, or other neurological symptoms.

International patients will find St. Joseph's Hospital and Barrow Neurological Institute a welcoming environment.  Translators are available to assist the medical teams to understand patients' specific symptoms and conditions.  Special arrangements can be made to provide patients and family with ethnic foods and culturally appropriate religious support as necessary.

The ResourceLink Information and Referral Service staff can put patients who are coming to Barrow in touch with the hospital's concierge service who can assist patients and their families with travel and hotel accommodations during their visit to Phoenix.
