Shawn D. Gale, PhD, ABPP-CN
Clinical Neuropsychologist
Dr. Gale is a clinical neuropsychologist and a researcher in the Neuropsychology/Neuroimaging Laboratory. In 1994, he received his PhD in Psychology from Brigham Young University. He completed an internship and 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology under Erin D. Bigler, PhD, ABPP-CN. He was in private practice in Salt Lake City and served as an adjunct assistant professor at Brigham Young University, where he taught graduate neuropsychology, undergraduate research design and statistics, and general psychology.
In 1999 he accepted a position as assistant professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, where he provided clinical services in the inpatient rehabilitation hospital and directed research in the department.
In 2002, Dr. Gale joined Barrow where he continues to divide his time evenly between research and clinical work. Clinically, he evaluates cognition in patients who have suffered a neurologic injury or illness. As part of the Epilepsy Center team, he administers the Wada test and conducts preoperative cognitive evaluations of patients.
Dr. Gale is certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology, subspecialty of Clinical Neuropsychology. He is one of only 18 psychologists in Arizona who have received this certification. Dr. Gale has published numerous scientific articles. His research has focused on neuroimaging of patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), but he has also published articles on carbon monoxide poisoning, sleep apnea, stroke, and memory in the elderly. His ongoing neuroimaging research involves the effects of TBI on the aging process in adults and on development in children.
