Barrow Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology
Fellowship Program

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory at the Barrow Neurological Institute, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, offers an ACGME-approved fellowship in Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology. The fellowship includes individualized Adult or Pediatric pathways, and offers extensive experience with outpatient and inpatient EEG, EMG, and Sleep Studies.

The fellowship program’s emphasis is on the development of skills suitable for an academic or practice career as an epileptologist. Fellowship experiences include inpatient video-EEG monitoring and pre-surgical evaluation, brain mapping techniques, ICU monitoring, and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. Our fellows participate in all aspects of the clinical care of patients with epilepsy, including the use of conventional anti-epilepsy drugs, vagal nerve stimulation, treatment with the ketogenic diet, and investigational drug trials. Additionally, Barrow has a very active program for the surgical treatment of epilepsy, and is nationally recognized for its Hypothalamic Hamartoma Program.

Barrow has two epilepsy monitoring units (EMU), a 10-bed unit for adult patients, and a new 5-bed unit for children, both utilizing state-of-the-art infrastructure. Barrow and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center offers residency programs in neurology, pediatric neurology, neurosurgery, internal medicine, and pediatrics. Support services from Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, and Neuropsychology are superb.

The fellowship offers either one-year or two-year experiences. The first year is largely directed toward the development of clinical and neurophysiological skills, and leads to eligibility for board certification in Clinical Neurophysiology. The second year is designed to develop a research interest and skill set suitable for pursuing an academic career as an independent investigator.

The program includes 9 fellowship-trained EEG and epilepsy faculty (5 Adult Epilepsy, 4 Pediatric Epilepsy). Three additional faculty members of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center conduct wet-bench laboratory research exploring the fundamental mechanisms relating to epilepsy and its consequences.
